Standing with her back pressed against her bedroom door, Virginia still ached for Zack’s heated touch. Her heart raced beneath her blouse. She placed her face in her hands. She’d made a fool of herself.

She knew nothing about intimacy.

But she knew everything about a woman’s longing and curiosity, the thrill of being touched by a willing hand. When Zack had slid his warm lips against her breast, the sensation had caused her senses to explode.

Casting a glance to the window to ensure the curtains were drawn, she unbuttoned her blouse and tossed it to her bed. Next came her corset, the stays of which she hadn’t been able to fully close while running. She slid out of the contraption. Cool air grazed her naked skin.

She ran her fingers over her skirt, unbuttoning the side and letting it drop to the floor, revealing a heavy layer of cotton petticoats. Those came off, too, followed by her bloomers. Finally, when she bent over to remove one thigh-high stocking, she caught the reflection of her body in the full-length mirror tucked inside the corner.

She straightened and looked at her reflection, bare except for white stockings that clung over her knees to halfway up her firm thighs, held in place by a ribbon tucked around the edges.

This is what Zack had wanted, she thought, staring at the curve of her breasts, the planes and angles of her abdomen, the length of her legs.

She could never let him. And yet when she heard his boots thud in the hallway, her heartbeat blasted to the sky.

The sound of his door latch closing echoed in the stillness.

If she slipped into his room this minute, naked and willing, she’d soon discover all the secrets he wanted to teach her, but how could she walk away then? He could take her and then simply discard her, as he had before. That would surely be more horrible than a broken engagement.

She had more dignity than that.

But heaven help her, she longed for Zack to kiss her anywhere he wanted.
